Port
Hardy
Port
Hardy, situated close to the most northerly end of Vancouver
Island is a modern and bustling community of approximately 5,000
and an excellent starting point for enjoying all the exciting
adventures that this area of BC offers. Nature lovers, outdoor
enthusiasts, fishermen and photographers have all discovered
the fact that the North Island region is an untapped wilderness
adventure playground.

Wildlife
Enjoy
all the wildlife viewing that the Northern Vancouver Island
area offers . . . it's everywhere! Visit Telegraph Cove, a small
community where whale watching adventures abound. Launch your
own boat, kayak or canoe or take advantage of the many whale
watching charter tours. South of Telegraph Cove is Johnstone
Strait and home to one of the best whale watching spots in North
America. This area also has many other marine species such as
dolphins, porpoises and sea lions.
The
Hardy Bay/Quatse River Estuary is home to bald eagles and great
blue herons. During the fall, salmon make their way through
the bay to enter the river where wildlife species feast on dead
and dying fish carcasses. Be sure to visit the Quatse River
Hatchery that's open year round. Other hatcheries in the area
include the Marble River Hatchery, Port Alice Hatchery and Gwa'ni
(Nimpkish) Hatchery. The Gator Gardens on Cormorant Island offers
excellent viewing of bald eagles, common ravens, swallows, downy
woodpeckers, and other birds.
You're
invited to explore Malcolm Island and the community of Sointula;
it's just a short ferry trip from Port McNeill. This island
offers relaxation and a slower pace with interesting attractions
and activities.
